So I was reading through the book of Matthew today and didn’t get very far before I read chapter 5 verse 13 which says, “You are the salt of the Earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” Of course I’ve heard that scripture before many times, but I decided to really ponder that for a bit. Or the afternoon for that matter. What is salt good for? Flavoring, preservation, healing…So as salt of the Earth, what am I supposed to be like or act like? What is my purpose? Well I like how the message version of this verse puts it, “You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?” I’m to bring out the God-flavors of the earth. That sounds like a big job to me. Lots o responsibility. Salt also preserves meats and other foods to prevent decay. I think that means I’m supoposed to work to prevent or slow the decay of the world. That’s a HUGE job!! Good thing I have every day to work toward that. Personally, when I think of salt, I think of canker sores. Maybe that’s because I seem to get them quite frequently and I like to torture myself by putting a teaspoon or so of salt on it only to keel over in agony. But I hear it helps them heal so I’m willing to try it. Am I supposed to be a healer too? I think the answer is yes. Looks like I have a lot on my plate being the salt of the earth. Good thing I have a big god to help me. :)
