I might have found my future career…that’s right a prison dietitian! Today I visited the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in our very own Springfield, Missouri. The reason for this visit was to see how the food service operation worked. Let me give you a few facts about the place before I proceed:
1. Number of prisoners is approximately 1,140
2. It opened in 1933
3. Prison riots happened in 1941, 1944, and 1959
4. This is an all male prison. Sorry no women inmates here.
5. A few notable inmates from the past include John Gotti-head of Gambino crime family and Robert Stroud-“Birdman of Alcatraz”
Our tour guide was a lovely dietitian who has worked there for 20 years..let me just say that this place seemed rather familiar if you know what I mean. Overall, I loved it. I honestly think I would like working in a place like that. First prison visit was a success.
